The stump grinder machines will remove the stump to a maximum of 600mm below ground level. Some of the grindings are used to backfill any holes. Once we have completed tree stump removal, re-landscaping can take place and the site can be replanted or hard landscaped to suit your requirements. Please note that different tree stumps can produce varying amounts of grindings as it depends on the species and condition of the tree.

Why remove tree stumps?
Stumps can take up space in a garden and can look unsightly. Also, stumps should be removed to prevent suckering (where new shoots arise from the leftover stump and unwanted regrowth). Whilst completely dead stumps won’t form suckers, but they can play host to root diseases such as honey fungus and attract termites.
What is the Best Way to Remove a Tree Stump?
The best way to remove a tree stump is by physically grinding and removing the tree stump rather than using chemicals to remove it as this is the quickest, safest, most cost-effective way to remove a tree stump.
A machine called a stump grinder literally ‘chews’ the stump up, leaving a heap of woodchip mixed with soil. You may want to consider what you want to do with the woodchip. It can be left to fill in the hole, or used as mulch in other areas of the garden, or taken away by the contractor. Specify which of these you would prefer before the work is started.
How to Remove a Tree Stump?
Physical stump removal is usually the best option. Ideally, the stump should be removed entirely, but if it’s not possible alternative methods usually give satisfactory results.
Grubbing out by hand or mechanical excavator can also remove the majority of the stump and root system, this can be hard work, expensive and cause a lot of damage to the surrounding area. Alternatively, machines known as a stump grinder will mechanically grind out the main root plate, leaving woodchips. Some roots will inevitably be left in the ground but will rot down.
Will the Tree Stump Re-grow?
Very few tree species will re-grow from residual roots if there is a risk of this, we can poison the regrowth that will ensure that all the root system is dead.
How Deep Should the Stump be Ground?
It depends on what the ground is going to be used for afterwards. Shallow grinding, 20-25cm (8-10in), is normally sufficient for laying turf, but you should allow for deeper, 30cm (12in), or more if replanting or landscaping or total removal can be achieved if needed for development or changing ground levels.
What Happens to the Roots?
Tree stump grinding focuses on removing the main stump bole, but, if necessary, any prominent lateral roots can be ground down if required. This will produce more spoil and ground disturbance – it is worth discussing the pros and cons when we are surveying the site. The old tree roots will remain underground, but without the stump, they will rot in time.
How long does it take to grind a tree stump?
It could be anything from a 15-minute job to a two-hour project.
Do dead tree stumps attract termites?
Unfortunately, yes, they do. You want to take note of specifically two types of termites who may well decide to set up home in your innocuous leftover tree stump.
Dampwood termites:
These little termites usually only eat rotted or decayed wood. They are not an immediate risk to your home.
Subterranean termites:
These are the most common and they will eat any type of wood or cellulose substance they can get their little teeth on. These are the ones you want near your home.
So how can you tell if a stump has been infested by termites?
Check for hollowed wood. If you notice that a stump appears or feels hollow (use a a sharp object to poke the stump if you are not sure), beware. Termites are tiny but the damage they cause can be massive. Once they are happily fed on your tree stump, they will move on to anything that is made of wood nearby. Termites will let themselves into your home.
It is best to remove a tree stump even before the termites come. This is the more pressing reason why you would want to get your stumps removed. Aesthetically a dead tree stump is nothing more than an eyesore but letting it play host to several generations of termites is not something you would want to risk.
